*********Due to the delay of exiting the school in the afternoon and not having the assistance of a crossing guard, there is the possibility that the drop off times will be different each day. If we easily get out and onto route 4 once loaded to leave easily, the above times are accurate. If we take additional time to depart, these times could be much later. Please have patience with this major change in the loading and unloading change. This is the first year we have not had a crossing guard in approx. 25+ years.

Northwood Transportation introduces efforts to
reduce school bus idling
Local school bus company Northwood Transportation, Inc. (NTI), has reaffirmed its commitment to reduce school bus idling in an effort to mitigate the harmful effects of diesel exhaust and protect the health of students and drivers. Northwood Transportation’s Stop Idling Campaign calls for drivers to turn off engines as soon as they arrive in the school yard and not allow engines to idle while discharging or waiting for passengers.
Air pollution from diesel vehicles has health implications for everyone, but children are more susceptible to this pollution because their respiratory systems are not fully developed. At schoolyards, idling school buses release emissions directly into the breathing zone of children. School bus drivers can make a significant impact on their health and that of their passengers by limiting engine idling whenever possible.
According to NTI President Deborah D’Alessandro, “Reducing idling also saves fuel, reduces engine wear and tear, and saves school bus companies and school districts thousands of dollars each year.”
NTI has also adopted the following procedures to reduce diesel emissions:
· During morning start-up, buses should idle no longer than necessary to bring them to proper operating temperature and in colder weather to defrost all windows.
· During athletic events in the winter, drivers should use indoor space to stay warm instead of remaining on the bus.
· When idling is necessary for heating or mechanical purposes, drivers should limit idling time, based on outside air temperature, according to state regulations.
As part of the campaign, D’Alessandro has been nominated for A Breathe Easy Leadership Award by the Northeast Diesel Collaborative (NEDC). The NEDC Breathe Easy Recognition Program recognizes the outstanding efforts of individuals or organizations that are actively promoting the goals of the NEDC. The NEDC Breathe Easy Leadership Award is given to those individuals or organizations that have demonstrated leadership in reducing diesel emissions and have made significant contributions to improving air quality and public health. Nominated parties are judged on their effectiveness in meeting the NEDC's goals and the degree to which they lead and inspire others to step up their efforts in reducing diesel emissions. The winners will be named in January 2012.
The NEDC is a regionally coordinated public-private initiative to reduce diesel emissions, improve public health, and promote clean diesel technology. The collaborative brings together the collective resources and expertise of several state environmental agencies, federal Environmental Protection Agency regional offices, and private-sector companies to address the existing fleet of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.

HELP IS NEEDED BY ALL PARENTS:
We are asking you to take some time and reinforce with your children the safe riding procedures...
#1 Stay in their assigned seat, facing forward at all times and out of the aisle.
#2 Backpacks off and setting in their laps. When loading or unloading the back packs need
to be on their backs so both hands are free to use the step railings. Large items should be
transported by parents to ensure the student can enter and exit safely.
#3 A quiet ride is a SAFE ride, so talking quietly will ensure the driver can hear oncoming
emergency vehicles, the 2-way radio and other children if help is needed. Loud outbursts
cause a distraction to the driver.
#4 Books are a great thing for kids to have access to during their short ride to or from school.
Toys are not recommended, because it creates a distraction to the driver when other
students try to grab it or stand up to try and see it.
#5 Respect the driver and other students that ride the bus.
ATTENTION PARENTS OF NORTHWOOD SCHOOL STUDENTS...!
It is a policy of Northwood School that students grades k-4 be meet at the stop by a parent or guardian. If someone besides yourself is meeting your child at the stop, please notify the school in writing of the name of this person. This note can list several adults and is good for the year! We do have a recommended authorization form on a separate page of this web site. You can print the form, then fill it out and send it in with your child. This note is copied by the school and given to Northwood Transportation. Emails or phone calls will not be accepted as authorization. LAST YEARS NOTES WILL NOT BE VALID!
